Runway 34 Real Story

Written by Sandeep Kewlani and  Aamil Keeyan Khan, the film Runway 34 is inspired by the true event of the  Boeing 737–800 aircraft belonging to the Jet Airways Doha to Kochi flight number 9W 555, with 150 passengers along with the crew, that had a narrow escape on 18 August 2015. It flew from Doha to Kochi and faced difficulties in landing at the Cochin International Airport due to bad weather and unclear visibility at 5:45 in the morning.
When the aircraft was not allowed to land at the airport due to bad weather, Captain Vikrant Khanna sent out  May-Day and force-landed the flight despite warnings and the makers will recreate this incident in the movie. Seeing the official trailer of the movie, many are curious about what really happened on that day. So here we can look into what really happened on this fateful day.
In the early morning of August 18, 2015, Jet Airways flight number 9W-555, a Boeing 737-800, had arrived from Doha, Qatar, and was supposed to land in Kochi, India. But the two pilots of the plane had to face the biggest tests of their lives when their flight didn’t turn out to be the way they wanted it to be.

Runway 34 Incident

At 5.45 am, the visibility was not clear due to the haze from the heavy rain the previous night. Almost holding on for half an hour, the pilot decided to divert the landing at the Trivandrum airport. However, they couldn’t land in Trivandrum also because of the poor visibility. Now the flight should have diverted to the nearest airport which was Bengaluru airport, but the plane ran out of fuel and at this situation, the fuel required was 1500 kg and at that time there was only 250 kg fuel. Seeing this the pilot decided to land at Trivandrum and made three attempts to land but couldn’t do so because the visibility was less than required for landing and had already informed the ATC about the fuel levels alarmingly running low.
And then the pilot and his co-pilot of the flight declared a May Day call, which shook the ATC room. The aircraft was hovering in the air, the emergency was declared at the airport and all the necessary steps were taken; getting ambulances ready, alerting the hospitals, and also informing city fire services. The pilot managed to land blindly in the seventh attempt after doing an unmatched six go-arounds and also if the pilots had gone for another go-around, the plane having not enough fuel would have crashed.
After six unsuccessful attempts, the plane was landed without a hitch. This incident turned to be one of the most serious safety incidents at any Indian airport and both the pilots were sacked following the order to inquiry and consequently, Captain Vikrant and co-pilot Tanya were put on trial for this dangerous action.
This whole landing saga drew this kind of attention due to the May Day Call and then the shortage of fuel. Because for an aircraft like Boeing 737-800, the minimum fuel reserve after landing is about 1,500 kg and this makes us to question the Jet Airways fuel policy which was not being in line with international safety standards.

What is May-day

The movie was initially named as May-Day. But later Devgn changed the title to Runway-34. Many are wondering what may be the meaning of the term May-Day.
Mayday is an emergency word used internationally as a distress signal to signal a life-threatening emergency primarily by aviators and mariners in voice-procedure radio communications. film Starring popular actors such as Ajay Devgn, Amitabh Bachchan, Angira Dhar, Rakul Preet Singh & Boman Irani, Aakanksha Singh, and Ajey Nagar, Runway – 34 is set to release on April 29, 2022, on the occasion of Eid and the official movie trailer was released on 21st March.
